Shopping bag and personalization
Save quantities and order notes, edit supported personalization, understand linked gift extras, and recover safely after an interrupted update.

On this page
The shopping bag is the place to check each product, its personalization and the current total before checkout. The drawer provides a compact view; View bag opens the full page, where the order note is available.
Choose the bag layout
In Theme settings → Shopping experience → After adding to bag, choose Open the bag drawer or Go to the bag page. Save and make a test add from the storefront preview.
Expected: the chosen bag view shows the actual added product and quantity. When the drawer opens, wait for Loading to finish and its controls to become available. Its previous contents are temporarily locked while the latest bag is loaded.
When you change something while already on the full bag page, the page may reload after saving. This keeps the visible rows, quantities and total together.
Add useful information to the drawer
In the theme editor, open Bag drawer and add Information, Benefit or Payment icons blocks. Open the bag preview with at least one product to see the content. Drag the blocks to reorder them, then choose Information position and Information style. Up to six information blocks are supported.
- Information accepts your own text and an optional policy or contact link. A link needs both its label and destination.
- Benefit pairs a short service detail with an optional icon. Describe a service your shop actually provides.
- Payment icons uses the payment methods enabled in Shopify; the available checkout methods can vary by customer, market and device.
Empty blocks are hidden from shoppers. The information area can sit above the order summary or below checkout. It does not move product rows, gift extras or checkout controls, calculate delivery dates, or create a shipping promise. Start with one short, useful block so the order remains easy to review.
Change a quantity
In the drawer
- Change the quantity on the intended product row.
- Select that row's Update bag.
- Wait for the refreshed quantity and total before another action.
- If you changed another row too, save that row separately.
Expected: the saved row shows the quantity Shopify accepted. Unsaved changes on another distinguishable row remain drafts and must also be saved before checkout.
On the full bag page
- Change the quantities you want to update.
- Enter or change an order note if needed.
- Select Update bag.
- Review the refreshed rows and estimated total.
Inventory and product purchase rules can prevent a requested quantity. If the store accepts a lower quantity or reports a gift quantity problem, review the actual bag before continuing. Repeatedly selecting Update will not create more stock.
Use Remove to remove an item. If another quantity or the order note is unsaved, the page first directs you to Update bag so that action does not discard the draft. To abandon a draft, return the field to its saved value before continuing.
Understand the unsaved-change reminder
A number typed into a quantity field is not a confirmed saved quantity. The total can remain at its previous value until an update finishes.
Before editing personalization, removing an item, opening the drawer from the full bag page, or adding another product from that page, save changed quantities and the order note with Update bag. The page may move focus to that button as a reminder.
On the full bag page, standard Continue to checkout also attempts to save pending changes before proceeding. Use Update bag first when you want to inspect the result, particularly after a stock warning or when using an accelerated payment option.
Avoid editing the same bag in several tabs. If another tab changes an item while an editor is open, the theme may require you to review the current bag instead of overwriting the other change.
Edit personalization
The bag editor supports the theme's Single line, Multiple lines and Dropdown Personalization fields, including choices displayed as buttons or image cards on the product page. Choices use a dropdown when editing in the bag. It appears on items added with those fields. App-specific customisers and uploaded artwork are not turned into theme text fields.
- Save any quantity and order-note drafts first.
- Select Edit personalization on the intended item.
- Wait for the current fields to load.
- Change the text or choice and select Save changes.
- Read the updated values in the bag before checkout.
Expected: the selected item's supported fields change, while its saved quantity and other details remain. Different names on otherwise identical products should be reviewed as separate items. Selecting Close or Back to your bag without saving leaves the saved personalization unchanged.
Required fields cannot contain only spaces. Character limits match the product field's configured limit. A dropdown option is a text choice; it does not change the product price.
If Edit personalization is missing, check how the item was added. An ordinary item, an older bag entry, or an app-generated item may not have the theme's editable fields. To replace such an entry, open its full product page, add the correct version, review it, and remove the unwanted old entry.
For field names, required settings and the illustrative name preview, see Personalized products.
Add an order note
Open the full bag page and use Add a note to your order, then select Update bag. Check that the text remains after the page refreshes.
An order note applies to the order. Personalization entered on a product applies to that item. Put names, initials and production choices in the product's fields rather than relying on the order note to identify which item they belong to.
The theme records the note; your own fulfilment process or app determines how staff use it. Check a test order before asking customers to use the note for a production or delivery instruction.
Understand linked gift extras
An extra selected with a main product on its product page can stay linked to that gift selection. These are separate, priced products.
| Main product quantity | One per selection | One for each item |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1 extra for this selection | 1 extra |
| 3 | 1 extra for this selection | 3 extras |
One per selection does not mean one extra across the entire order. Two separately added gift selections can each have their own extra.
Change the main product's quantity to update its linked extras. An extra's quantity is shown as part of that relationship rather than as an independent quantity choice. You can remove an extra on its own. Removing the main product removes its associated extras. An extra you removed is not automatically added back when you later increase the main quantity.
Suggestions added from Gift extras in the bag are independent products. They are not attached automatically to a particular personalized gift and have their own bag quantity. See Gift extras for setup and examples.
Recover from a gift-quantity warning
If the bag says some gift quantities need a closer look:
- Review the main gift, its displayed details and each extra.
- Save any pending quantity or order-note changes.
- Use Sync gift quantities when it is available, then wait for the refreshed bag.
- If the combination is still unsuitable or an extra is unavailable, remove the affected extra and review the remaining items.
- Continue only when the warning is resolved and the quantities are what you intend to buy.
Some interrupted or app-modified combinations cannot be repaired automatically. An individual Remove action lets the shopper remove the selected unwanted line; remaining problems still need review. The theme does not guess which unrelated items to remove. If necessary, remove the affected selection and add it again from the product page after confirming it is no longer in the bag.
Recover after an interrupted add or save
A slow or lost response does not tell you whether the store received the change. The theme can pause checkout, disable a repeated action, refresh the bag or send the shopper to the full bag page for review. This helps avoid duplicate additions.
- Stop selecting Add or Save repeatedly.
- Open View bag, or use the full bag page already shown.
- Check which products, quantities and personalization are actually present.
- Remove an unwanted duplicate if one exists. If the desired item is absent, return to its product page and add it once.
- If a gift warning remains, follow the sync steps above before checkout.
If the bag cannot refresh, restore the connection and reopen it. Preserve any text you need before manually refreshing a page, since unsaved fields are not an order record. If the problem repeats, collect the non-sensitive details in Contact and support.
