Start in an unpublished copy of the theme. You can build and preview your store in Shopify's theme editor without changing the theme customers currently see.
Start with the Keepsake preset
This guide covers the single Keepsake preset prepared for the Theme Store. Its opening layout contains ten enabled sections: an editorial hero, collection cards, product tabs, scrolling text, a shoppable scene, gift finder, ordering steps, image stories, FAQ and newsletter.
You can change every section and color scheme in the theme editor. A color or font change does not rearrange page sections. See the Keepsake layout recipe for the starting order.
New sections use prompts that explain what to enter. Replace these prompts with accurate content before showing a new section to customers.
Prepare your content
You will need:
- Your logo, or a short business name for a text wordmark.
- Real products with prices, available variants, photographs and useful descriptions.
- A main shopping collection and any smaller collections you want to promote.
- Your actual making, shipping, care and returns information.
- A main menu and footer links.
- A desktop opening photograph and, if necessary, a separate phone crop.
- Optional ordinary products for paid services such as a blank card or gift wrapping.
The theme package supplies layouts, settings and optional sample photography. It does not create products, collections, Shopify Pages or menus. It does not import an entire demonstration store.
Install the theme
- In Shopify admin, open Online Store → Themes.
- Add Keepsake through your purchase channel. If you received an installation ZIP, upload that ZIP without unpacking it. Keep the theme in preview while you add your store content.
- Find the new theme in your theme library and open its editor.
- Keep it unpublished while you add your content. If you are changing an existing store, retain a copy of your current theme.
Result: the new theme is available for editing and previewing. Your current published storefront remains the one customers use until you deliberately publish the replacement. Shopify explains its upload and preview controls in Adding themes.
Connect the essentials
- In Header, select your Logo and Main menu. If you are using a text logo, set Theme settings → Brand and social links → Text logo instead.
- In Theme settings → Shopping experience, select Default shopping collection. Unspecified shopping links and Continue shopping use it; leaving it empty uses all products. Links you explicitly choose elsewhere keep their own destinations.
- Connect the three collection cards. In Product collection tabs, choose a Collection or Hand-picked products for each group. The first unconfigured group can use all products; other empty groups appear only in the editor. In Shop a scene, select the pictured products and check the numbered positions. In Gift finder, choose the actual products in its six prepared Gift idea blocks, then adapt the labels and reasons.
- Replace the headline, image and links in the opening hero. Your selected image overrides bundled sample photography. Check the phone preview. For a link to the product tabs, use
#personal-editwith the matching Section anchor; keep How it works at#how-it-workswhile Personalization steps remains visible. The default shopping collection remains a safe primary destination until you configure the homepage content. - Follow Home and brand to choose typography and color schemes.
- Set up your pages and navigation, then your personalized products.
- Save, reopen the editor and preview the storefront. Use the launch checklist before publishing.
Result: the store shows your products and brand, and its main shopping links reach the intended collection.
Avoid common setup mistakes
The preview looks less complete than the demonstration. Check resource pickers first. A theme cannot display a collection, product or Page that has not been created and connected in your store. The ZIP includes the ten-section structure and optional opening, outdoor-tote and scene samples; it does not import the demonstration catalogue. Choose products in additional tab groups, scene blocks and Gift finder. Hide a section while its resources are incomplete.
The scene shows several items. Is that a bundle? No. The numbered links open individual product pages, where shoppers choose options and complete personalization. The scene does not create a combined offer, set price or discount. Explain separately what the product includes.
Changing a color or font did not rearrange the home page. Reorder or add sections in the editor using the layout recipe.
A personalized template is missing from the product's assignment list. Shopify's assignment list uses templates in the currently published theme. You can preview a template in the unpublished theme editor first; plan its assignment as part of your launch instead of publishing an unfinished theme just to expose the list. See Shopify's template guidance.
A beautiful sample says something your business does not offer. Replace every example promise, including materials, lettering choices, packaging, making time and delivery wording. The theme does not verify those claims for you.
